New year, new you – or maybe not

Spring Blossom. A new year and new growth for your mind, body and soul.

The Christmas lights have long since been packed away, the champagne glasses have been returned to the cupboards and we are now well over a week since 'Quitters Day', the day in which most people have already given up their new year resolutions.

We are often encouraged to make New Year’s Resolutions. To attempt to improve ourselves; and we make promises to ourselves to change, and to become better people than we were. Goals such as paying back monies, new exercise regimes, altered eating habits, and renewed commitment to fiefdoms, are all timeless examples of our self-imposed pressure to become better individuals.

And then we forget, lose interest, find it too hard to maintain.

I think many would agree that, whilst its good to reflect on possible improvements which could be made to our behaviour or practices, and our treatment of others – its less helpful to impose unrealistic personal, financial, physical, mental or recreational goals on ourselves – which are likely to end in failure, and risk causing the associated feelings of negativity and disappointment in ourselves.

A simpler way to give ourselves space to gradually adopt more manageable small improvements, is to look after ourselves holistically. Reflexology is an ancient practice; probably as old as our need to make New Year’s Resolutions; and using gentle pressure and massage on the hands or feet, a trained practitioner will use their skills to reduce congestion and “bubbles” of tension.

That pain that we experience when bending over to pick things up off the floor may not require a tortuous exercise programme to rectify. The stress overload that may be with us occasionally, or more often, might be aided by a reduction in Adrenalin, brought about by regular stimulus of the appropriate therapeutic area. The aches and pains, tiredness, and anxiety felt by pregnant women might be eased by the relaxing hand or foot therapy given by trained Reflexologists.

Apart from immediate relief, the holistic care a Reflexologist can offer their clients can give space and hope that it is possible to make other changes that can be maintained. An improved mental outlook can give you space to improve other areas of your life in a more measured, achievable fashion. Feeling less stressed about managing change might open up your creative flourish and enable you to take up a new hobby; or put you in a better place to try out that new lettuce-only diet!

I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, however, if I did, it would be to keep on being passionate about Reflexology – caring about my clients’ whole lives, and relieving their issues with my skill. That’s not a Resolution, that’s a Promise.

I would just like to add a huge thank you to Jane, for giving me the push to get on with writing a blog and giving me the inspiration for my post x
