Perhaps unsurprisingly for some the vast majority of my clients are female. Most often men who come in either have been encouraged by their female partners, given a gift certificate, or, at times, are seeking relief from pain or stress when nothing else has worked.
It seems as though new male clients are nervous of being in a therapeutic setting or perhaps skeptical of how Reflexology works and are almost always apologetic about their feet. But once tried and tested ,they they quickly relax into their treatment, forget about any reservations they may have had and discover reflexology to be deeply relaxing, re-energising and restorative.
So what are the benefits that Reflexology can have on men?
Like women, Men can have demanding jobs, overload from news and media, feel pressure to provide for a family, be physically challenged at work, and suffer from mental distress, anxiety, headaches and backaches, or depression.
The Men's Health Forum states that while women are more likely to be diagnosed with common mental health disorders, there is still indicators of widespread diagnosed mental health issues in men. Although mental health is a hot topic at the moment, men's coping mechanisms tend to be less healthy than women's. With less access to the support of friends, relatives and the community and are nearly three times more likely than women to become alcohol dependent, leaving men feeling alienated, and be uncertain about how to get off the treadmill of life.
Reflexology triggers the parasympathetic nervous system which restores the body to a state of calm and provides deep relaxation. This, in turn, has a ripple effect as it relaxes all the systems of the body: digestive, circulatory, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, immune, etc. Reflexology can help to improve sleep as well as digestion and elimination. It also helps to support the body in repairing tissues and re-balancing systems such as the hormonal system. It can also help to sooth tired muscles in the legs and feet for men who engage in sports to help improve performance, or men have physical jobs that require heavy work boots that make feet tired and fatigued.
Reflexology can really help you to look after your physical and mental health as it helps you to simply stop, clear away your worries and strengthen your mind to focus on the everyday goals and challenges that lie ahead. I have found that the men who take advantage of reflexology who live high pressured lives really welcome the quiet space and deep restfulness they experience during their sessions.
So if you are a man considering reflexology why not give it a go? Or if you have a man in your life…a partner, friend, brother, dad, colleague…who you think could benefit from some chill out time and a chance to reboot their system, why not suggest reflexology to them? There’s nothing to lose from trying it out and I guarantee that even just one treatment will provide a little zen!
